Hitachi CW40 16" Variable Speed Scroll Saw: Hitachi 40 info
This was my First scroll saw. Since then I find I can definitely upgrade later, and will when this one wears out. My second project on the saw was with Spiral Blades (reg. not flat end ones) It worked fine for them. Just put them in like any other plain end blades. Don't know why they didn't work for the other reviewer. Too much tension makes the lower blade pop out sometimes, but I just tighten down more and then it usually works OK. Only have this with very fine 37 tpi blades however. The light is pretty much useless - get a better brighter clamp on type. One day I will get a better saw, but it will and has made many projects for me and I love using it. I did also remove the Hold down clamp as it actually got in the way and made it more dangerous to work on small projects - when you can't get your fingers in the right place to hold it down! (We all know why they put them on the saws). I also Used the gray screw clamp from the hold-down Clamp in place of the little round one from the upper arm (that uses Allen key). That way I do not need the tool to tighten the top clamp. A big plus to me. Publ.Date : Tue, 23 Feb 2010 15:00:00 -0800
Red Wing 406 work boots: Great Work Boot
My favorite day to day work boots, they are nice and light and feel almost as light a sneakers. They are waterproof, which is nice for those mornings with dew covered grass, or those horrid rainy and muddy days. The sole does not hold mud like some work boots with more aggressive soles do. Nice for when your in and out all the time. These boots are available in wide (EE) sizes which is important for me. The one minor aggravation for me is that the tongue extends a bit higher than usual and when ever I'm sawing, they tend to catch a lot of saw dust. Publ.Date : Mon, 20 Jul 2009 22:39:11 -0700
Stabila Customer Service: Sent in my 48" level for warranty
I recently had to send in my 48" Stabila level for warranty. I went to my local tool store and asked about an exchange, and the employee said Stabila no longer offered exchanges through the store, and I had to go directly through Stabila. I contacted Stabila through their website and their CS rep emailed me back explaining the process to send it in. It was simple, I had to package it and send to to Stabila where they would evaluate it within 48 hours and then send a replacement if it the problem was covered by their warranty. Everything went smoothly except for the fact that I had to pay $20 for packaging and shipping to Stabila. Paying to send something in is the norm these days, but I still dont like it. It took about a week for the level to reach Stabila, they had it for a couple days and it took about another week for it to get back to me. I would have liked faster shipping, but I wasn't working anyways so I was not at a loss. Publ.Date : Wed, 05 Aug 2009 00:51:37 -0700
Bosch 4-1/2" 6 Amp Small Angle Grinder - 1375-01: well designed and durable
Great grinder. I have 3 and this on sees the most use. I have used it every week, more or less, for the last 7 years and it is still going strong. The paddle switch is a must have IMO. If the grinder gets away from you it stops turning. With a standard on/off toggle the grinder stays on until you grab it ( a fast way to an injury) or you unplug it. My only complaint is the that the blade guard release tab gets stuck occasionally and makes changing the orientation of the guard difficult. Publ.Date : Wed, 20 May 2009 05:04:22 -0700

Fast-Cap Old Standby Tape measure: An alternative ruler, with some nice features
This ruler has worked out well for me, after I got used to it. I usually use Stanley's Fat Max rulers and have become accustomed to their use. Two things are different on this ruler compared to the Fat Max. The hook does not have a lip on top, this feature is what I miss the most, second, this ruler has an additional lock button positioned under the bottom of the outfeed slot, this I find most handy for making multiple fast inside measurements. This ruler will not stand out as far as the Fat Max, but I don't really find that to be much of a problem as I use this ruler for mostly shorter measurements. The case seems durable, with its rubber coating. There is a pencil sharpener built in, that I seldom use. The belt clip is different. It has a extension over its top that allows you to open the clip, making it easier to clip on, this is especially handy for me as I often clip this to the corner of my pocket and not all my pants have the stiffness to open a normal clip. This ruler also has a small surface that you can write on, which has on occasion, come in handy. Publ.Date : Sat, 18 Jul 2009 16:31:58 -0700
Handyman in Your Pocket: A great little reference book
A great little reference book containing a lot of information. Has a ton of useful tables. Trig, friction loss in pipes, rafter spans, chain strength and weight, wire carrying capacities, you get the idea... This book has everything from anchors to zinc sheet gauge. The only shortcoming in my opinion is that it does not cover larger fasteners, sometimes I do need to know what size pilot hole to drill for a 3/4" lag, other than that I would definitely recommend this book. Reasons for less than perfect score Presentation- small print, I guess that is to be expected in a pocket size book. Quality- This is a paperback book, as such it ends up dog eared in rather short order, if you use it on site much. I would be willing to pay more for a leather bound edition. Dewalt DW618B3E 2 1/4 Hp 3 base router set: A Nice Set with a Couple of Minor Flaws
I don't usually buy yellow tools, but needing a plunge router quickly, so as not to hold up a job,I went to a local big box and picked up the DW618B3 set. Most of my other routers are older models, so I was really surprised by how much I like the soft start feature in this router, it really does make a difference in usability.
I really like how the plunge base works, especially how it is of the non auto locking variety, as this seems to speed my ability to produce both keyholes and cabinet shelf pin holes. The D handle base with it's trigger switch also is a boon to speedy edge routing. To bad they include a cheesy stamped steel edge guide. Nowhere near the quality of either the Bosch or Porter Cable edge guides. While the edge guide does work, it does nothing to inspire confidence. The standard router base holds the router motor quite well. It is easy to adjust the height and fit my hand comfortably. In this base the router has a very low profile. The motor feels fairly powerful for a mid range tool, it doesn't seem prone to stalling if kept within its limits. the one gripe I have with the motor is that the shaft lock doesn't really lock the shaft. I wouldn't have complained if they did not include this feature, but if they are going to include it, it should work. They only include one wrench, again stamped steel, in this kit. The removable power cord is an additional feature which could come in handy, should you need a quick replacement. The case is the size of a small suitcase and can be quite tricky to fit everything back into. You probably should pay close attention when you first start removing things. I have not used the dust collection capabilities of this set (some shrouding and integral ducting is included in the set) preferring to work where dust is not an issue. DeWalt 20" Variable-Speed Scroll Saw - DW788: Great scroll saw
I've had this saw for about a year with not one problem. Extremely smooth at all speeds. No vibration at all. Easy blade change. With the rear leg extensions, you're right on top of your work. You can put the puffer right on the edge of the blade and it is still out of the way. I would add a foot switch and an upper arm lift. The later keeps you from having to put a block under the arm when changing blades. I would highly recommend this saw. Publ.Date : Tue, 09 Mar 2010 02:02:01 -0800
